Ghee Hiang pledges RM150,000 to KDU Penang University College in scholarship partnership

George Town, 4 August – KDU Penang University College (KDU Penang) signed the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) in Collaboration with Ghee Hiang Manufacturing Co. Sdn Bhd amidst a special Signing Ceremony organised at the Bon Appetit restaurant on KDU Penang’s campus recently.

Ghee Hiang Executive Chairman, Dato’ Ar. Ooi Sian Hian and KDU Head of School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts, Ms. Cindy Loh, witnessed the signing ceremony. Ghee Hiang Executive Director Mr. Ch’ng Huck Theng and KDU Penang Vice-Chancellor Dr. Chong Beng Keok signed the MoA on behalf of their respective organisations. During the signing, a mock cheque with a total of RM150,000 was presented to KDU Penang as well as an additional RM60,000 as a generous personal contribution by Dato’ Ar. Ooi himself.

The major thrust of the MoA is to promote a mutually beneficial cooperation between KDU Penang and Ghee Hiang in providing more opportunities for students to pursue culinary arts in the near future. It would also help those in need of financial aid to pursue their dreams of a career in the culinary arts.

“With this collaboration, we will be implementing co-branding exercises by inviting Ghee Hiang representatives to any activities which involve our hospitality and culinary arts programmes. Together we will help nurture the development of the students from the programmes”, said KDU Penang Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Chong Beng Keok.

KDU Penang’s School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts was established in 1991, as the pioneer in the northern region, as well as the first renowned hospitality, tourism and culinary arts school in Penang, providing quality education and knowledge to future hoteliers and chefs. Since then, it has quickly become the first private university college to offer students the opportunity to obtain a prestigious Swiss diploma and degree qualification.

The school furnishes students with RM 6 Million worth of learning facilities in equivalence to professional commercial kitchens, F&B outlets and hotels in the industry. This ensures that they are familiar with industry standard tools, and are equipped with practical knowledge and skills to remain competitive and marketable in the future.
