George Town, Nov 28: Locals rarely catch Rapid Penang buses, especially the campus population at KDU Penang University College.
A class of 33 students found out in a survey that their university mates hardly ever use this form of public transport and to correct that, they organised “Hop A Bus”, a social awareness campaign to encourage the community to use public buses by highlighting the benefits of Rapid Penang.
The team of Diploma in Mass Communication students of KDU Penang first held a fundraising event by selling food and merchandise at Occupy Beach Street before the main campaign celebration at the campus foyer. The president of Hop A Bus, Mohamed Imran Mohamed Saiful said most Penangites rarely take the bus, which are heavily utilised by foreigners.
“Most of us use our own transportation. This attitude adds to our island’s traffic congestion. Therefore, we hope this campaign will encourage the public especially, the younger generation, to use public transport to reduce traffic problems and promote a sustainability lifestyle,” said Imran.
A team from Rapid Penang was also present to take enquiries from the public on its bus routes. They also provided special discounts for those want to renew their bus passes.
“More people should take public transportation. The students were motivated to promote Rapid Penang after their survey on the campus showed that most of the locals rarely use it. Therefore, they organised the campaign to change public attitude and encourage people to enjoy the benefits of public transport,” said Pavithra Aridass, the campaign advisor.
