The recent launch of the Government's Blueprint in Industry Centre of Excellence (ICoE) is certainly a wake-up call to institutions of higher learning with regard to the delivery of industry ready graduates. The plan, which calls for a minimum 75 percent of graduates being able to gain employment upon completion of their studies, has prompted numerous private higher education institutions to use various different graduate employability USPs that are not only distinct but also differentiate them from others. However, a word of caution is needed as it is indeed foolhardy for any educational institution to make good employability claims just to draw high enrolment numbers. No one knows this better than KDU College given our stellar track record in producing industry ready graduates for different sectors for the past 30 years.
At KDU College Penang, we take our students beyond the classroom by constantly organizing industry talks and study trips, master classes, industry placements and outcome based interactive lectures to give them the edge over the rest when it comes to industry environment acclimatization. Therein lies the secret to our success given our ability to consistently produce highly sought after graduates that comprise, and are an accurate reflection of our annual high graduate employability statistics.
But don't just take our word for it... a recent 2012 Graduate Survey Report undertaken by KDU College Penang's revealed that 96% of our graduates were either gainfully employed or furthering their studies. Dr Chong Beng Keok, CEO & Principal of KDU College, who was elated by this excellent statistic said, "We will always adhere to maintaining high standards of graduate employability by keeping our students industry-relevant".
Dr Chong elaborated further by pointing out that the internship components for KDU College Penang's academic programs have helped to strengthen the marketability of its graduates as they can showcase the true strengths of KDU College Penang's students in contributing to an actual industry workplace. A case in point being KDU College Penang's extensive internship network where two of its Business students, who were recently selected as interns for the Genting Hong Kong internship program competition, were offered full time employment upon successful completion of their internship.
One of the interns, Samantha Sik Wan Zhen who holds a B.A. (Hons) in Business Management & Finance from Keele University, was extremely thrilled to be employed by Genting Hong Kong. Recalling how she applied for the internship programme, she said "Actually, I happened to know about the offer when my classmates called and informed me. Coincidentally, my mother also saw the advertisement and encouraged me to take part in this apprentice programme".
Ong Bee Ling, who holds a B.A. (Hons) in Human Resource Management & Business Management from Keele University, successfully clinched the Best Intern Award as well as prizes such as a new iPad, Canon EOS 650D and RM1400.00 worth of Book Vouchers. "I am thankful to Mr Prakash Lachmanan, the Head of Department of the KDU Business School for informing me about the programme which offers excellent opportunities. The best part of this internship is having the chance to work with GHK offices in Manila, Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Penang. Sometimes I am required to travel during recruitment campaigns and the experience was no doubt a wonderful one!" said Ong.
The true big prize for both of them is that they are now fully employed by Genting Hong Kong. Vying for the top 10 spots from among more than 200 applicants was clearly not an easy feat but through a sterling display of courage and persistence, they persevered and both were rewarded with full-time employment.
Ms Cheong Cheng, the GHK AVP for Corporate Communications & PR, said that Ong Bee Ling was a worthy winner of the Best Intern Award and that the prizes that went with it underlined her impressive accomplishments. Ong Bee Ling also expressed her gratitude to Ms Joey Phuah, KDU College Penang's Head for the Student Service Department for guiding her throughout her involvement in the Student Council that organized campus events such as the Green Awareness Campaign, Charitable Events and the Annual Prom Dinner.
KDU College Penang's Senior Marketing & Communications Manager Mr Neoh Soon Ken who was present at prize presentation ceremony. Beaming proudly, he said. "Both our KDU-Keele graduates are living proof that hard work knows no boundaries. My congratulations to both Samantha and Ong, and I wish them good luck as they embark on a challenging yet rewarding career".
