KDU College Penang pens MoA with Dongseo University, Korea

George Town, 6 February – KDU College Penang (KDU College) today signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Dongseo University, Korea (DSU), formalising an arrangement for KDU College to offer two new double-degree programmes – BA (Hons) Creative Multimedia and BA in Communication (Hons) major in New Media.

Under the new programmes, students will pursue the first two years of studies at KDU College and the final two years at Dongseo University in Korea. Students get the best learning experiences in both institutions, with an expert faculty and state-of-the-art facilities, so they are industry-ready upon graduation.

This collaboration complements the state government’s plan to promote Penang as a hub for the creative multimedia industry. In 2014, the state initiative Creative Animation Triggers (CAT) was launched to attract local and international animation firms to set up studios in Penang. This project is estimated to generate some 1,000 higher-income job opportunities here.

Speaking at the ceremony at KDU College campus, Dr Chong Beng Keok, Principal of KDU College, said, “KDU College keeps it pulse on industry trends and builds on its programmes to meet real-world needs. The new double-degree programmes provide comprehensive training in digital content production, including informatics-based methods, within the game, digital animation and audio-effect industries. By expanding on its programme offerings to meet industry demands, KDU College offers more opportunities for students to venture into the creative multimedia industry.”

“Dongseo University is excited about building a fruitful partnership with KDU College Penang. Our two institutions are progressing rapidly, and by working together we can create mutual benefits. I believe there is great potential for Penang to become a leader in creative contents and services, which will represent a significant share of future economic growth and activity,” said Dr. Jekuk Chang, President of Dongseo University, who represented the University in the signing ceremony.

Professor Dr Jekuk Chang also remarked that digital content is a fast-growing industry and Korea is a world leader in this market. He added, “The strong competitiveness and advanced IT infrastructure in Korea, together with Dongseo University’s specialisations in IT, Film and Digital Contents, create an ideal learning environment for students wishing to pursue a degree in multimedia and digital entertainment.”

Dongseo University was founded in 1992 with two branch campuses in US and China, offering specialised degrees in Film and Imagery, Information Technology, Design and Digital Contents. It is a leading university in Korea, providing the best education opportunities to foster creativity and talented artists in the digital contents industry.

Also present at the signing ceremony was YAB Mr Lim Guan Eng, Chief Minister of Penang and General Manager of Invest Penang, Ms Loo Lee Lian.
