George Town, 30 May 2015 – KDU College Penang (KDU College) organised its inaugural Lego Cup Robotic Competition on 30 May this year, utilising for the very first time National Instruments (NI) LabVIEW’s professional software as the programming language.

Organised by KDU College’s Engineering students from the School of Engineering, Science and Technology, with sponsorships from many organisations including 1Malaysia for Youth (iM4U), Maluri Equipment Sdn Bhd, Supreme Didactic Sdn and Adprint Sales & Services, the competition attracted 83 participants from 10 secondary schools in Penang.

According to Dr. Yeap Gik Hong, Academic Head of KDU College’s Engineering Department, the Lego Cup Robotic Competition aimed to cultivate interest in science and mathematics through robotics among secondary school students.

“This competition also marked the first time we are publicly showcasing our collaboration with NI since formalising our academic-industry collaboration with them last November. We are proud to extend KDU College’s industry-relevant teaching and learning facilities to inspire young minds.”

Two days prior to the competition, KDU College held a LEGO-Mindstorm workshop for participants which was conducted by three Field Applications Engineers from NI. After the workshop, participants were provided with extended trial version of the NI LabVIEW software to practise and prepare for the competition.

Throughout the competition, held at KDU College’s Auditorium, the student participants were under the watchful guidance of five NI engineers who formed the LabVIEW software support team.

After an intense round of competition, Team Robodes 2 from SMJK Chung Ling in Butterworth emerged as the Champion. Members Goi Man Qi, Lee Chang Hong, Ch'ng Chee Wei and Lim Keng Yang walked away with cash prizes worth RM1,500, medals and a trophy. This is followed by first runner-up Team Steel Boyz from SMK Tinggi Bukit Mertajam and second runner-up, Team Quantum from Penang Chinese Girls’ High School.

KDU’s School of Engineering, Science and Technology is one of the six schools at KDU College Penang. Known for its strong industry linkages, the school is well-equipped for hands-on learning experience, including a Very Large Scale Integration (VSLI) training facility, the latest simulation facilities and an industry-based syllabus developed by industry experts.
