KDU Engineering alumnus receives Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Award

Leong Wei Yin, an alumnus from KDU Penang, was recently honoured as one of the twenty successful international recipients of the 2012 round of the Prime Minister's Australia Asia Award.

The Prime Minister's Australia Asia Award is part of Australia's initiative to bring together the Endeavour Awards administered by the Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education and the Development Awards administered by AusAID. It also aims to build strong and enduring education and professional linkages between Australia and Asia where Australian universities and the Australian Government work in partnership to identify and reward high calibre scholars.

Leong Wei Yin completed his Diploma in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering at KDU Penang before moving on to pursue his Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree from Deakin University in Geelong, Australia. He was a bright student, scoring 10As in his SPM that earned him a KDU Merit Scholarship. He graduated with First Class Honours in his Diploma programme that led to the awarding of a scholarship by the Nanyang Siang Pau Education Fund in 2007, and thus enabling him to pursue his Degree studies in Australia.

After graduating, Wei Yin joined Intel Microelectronics Sdn Bhd, Malaysia as a Product Development Engineer following which, in 2011 he decided to pursue his PhD at Deakin University, Australia. For his thesis, he is focusing on exploring new methods for fault diagnosis as well as isolation and design of decentralised tolerant control schemes for complex systems such as an electric power system. His research will assist in potentially developing new fault tolerant schemes that can be utilised at industrial plants to decrease unscheduled stoppages and enhance the reliability and productivity of their machinery.

The timeliness of his research also works well for Wei Yin as The Prime Minister's Australia Asia Award grants scholarships to the best and brightest university students from Australia and Asia. It provides a unique opportunity for postgraduates and undergraduates to undertake not only international study and research, but also internships or work placements. As part of his award, Wei Yin will have the option of undertaking an internship or work placement, upon the completion of his studies, in Australia.

An extremely proud and delighted Dr. Chong Beng Keok, KDU Penang's CEO & Principal, said, "Wei Yin has always been a bright kid. His attention to details in his work as well as his tireless energy to always ask 'one extra question' is the foundation of his bountiful innovate ideas which is essential for the engineering industry." Wei Yin himself is appreciative of his undergraduate days at KDU Penang, as he believes that "My lecturers in KDU prepared me well for the rigors of the engineering world. They also taught me that hard work always brings good rewards which has been proven right for me over time for the past few years."
