KDU Penang Engineering students triumph in startup competition

George Town, 18 November – KDU Penang University College (KDU Penang)’s Engineering students recently triumphed at the IHL Startup Challenge 2016 competition. This competition is a joint effort between Ministry of Higher Education, Institutions of Higher Learning (IHLs) in Malaysia and MDEC’s Talent Enablement Division with the support from the industries such as MaGIC, Brand Geeks, Next Money, Alpha Catalyst Consulting and MyTriz.

This competition aims to provide a platform for students to gain hands-on experience in applying innovative thinking methods to solve real problems for real customers; and at the same time acquire knowledge and skills on how to start-up an ICT business. Students who are interested to explore digital entrepreneurship and have innovative ideas in ICT can be identified through this competition and their potential will be further groomed to be able to accelerate to become ICT SME start-ups.

2 teams from the Department of Engineering that mentored by Dr Chang Boon Peng managed to enter the Grand Finale of the IHL Startup Challenge 2016 competition after 3 rounds of shortlisting process. The Grand Finale was held yesterday at The Vertical, Bangsar South City. They emerged as the 1st Runner-up and 2nd Runner-up for the non-degree category, walking away with trophies and the cash prize of RM6000 and RM3000, respectively.
