KDU Penang recruiting “Treasure Hunters”

GEORGE TOWN, Apr 3 – Engineering students of KDU Penang are organising yet another fun and exciting charity event this year. “Charity GG Hunt 2014” is scheduled on 20 April 2014 at the Penang UNESCO World Heritage site in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2014.

Adhering to the call from Penang state government, KDU Penang is partnering with St. Xavier Institution Penang and Eden Handicap Service Centre with the support of Penang Green Council in creating a cleaner and greener Penang as well as to observe the International Earth Day which falls on 22 April 2014. Besides, the organising team also aims to achieve 4 goals through this event which is to instil engineering innovation among secondary school students, cultivate recycling habit, encourage acts of charity and promote edu-tourism in Penang.

The Charity GG (Go Green) Hunt is divided into two parts which are a treasure hunt and a modelling game of the second Penang Bridge replica using recycled items. The 50-metre bridge model will induct KDU Penang into the Malaysian Book of Records for the third time with the endeavour of creating the longest bridge model using recycled materials.

Dr Wendy Chin Siew Wen, the lecturer of KDU Engineering Department who is also the Advisor for this event explained that the bridge model will be dismantled after the event and all its part will then be sold. Proceeds generated from the treasure hunt as well as the sale of recycled materials will be channelled to Eden Handicap Service Centre which is also the co-organiser of this event. She further explained that the team is collecting recyclable items such as newspapers, plastic containers, aluminum cans and urged the public to donate the items to KDU Penang to be part of this event as well as to contribute to the Eden Handicap Service Centre.

As for the treasure hunt, there will be 2 categories which are the Secondary School Category for students aged between 13 and 17 and the Open Category for adults aged 18 and above. We are targeting 60 to 100 teams with 5 members in each team. There will be many attractive prizes up for grab including cash prizes and scholarships as stated below.

The organising committee also showcased their specially-designed “passport” for “Charity GG Hunt 2014” during the press conference on Thursday at KDU Penang campus. The “passport” is to be handed out to participants during the event and it has the essential keys for each team to complete the hunt. Participants will find useful clues leading them to their treasures around the Penang UNESCO World Heritage site. In addition, there will be vouchers attached in the passport courtesy of our sponsors. In supporting of this meaningful event, Honey Green Resources has also agreed to be our recycling sponsor whereby every RM1 of recycled items we sell to them, they will top up extra RM1 to benefit Eden Handicap Service Centre.

“This event wouldn’t be a success without the kind sponsorship and support from various organisations and individual sponsors. I would like to sincerely thank each and every one of them who has contributed towards the event,“ said Dr Chong Beng Keok, Principal and CEO of KDU Penang. “There are Platinum Sponsor who sponsored RM10,000 but prefer to remain anonymous. Bronze sponsors are reputable business like RoomMate, MyArte Café, Justlife, ControlEZ and Emerald Systems. Other sponsors include E&O Hotel, Escape Theme Park, Eu Yan Sang, Tambun Lost World, Nukleus Innerwear and Nyonya House for the lucky draw prizes. Other supporting partners are DeliverEat.com, Gohkaki Café, Roti Bean and Town Bike. Dr Chong further expounded that the organising team is still looking for more sponsorship from the corporations.

Leading to the event, there is another exciting activity happening at KDU Penang whereby a “trash tower” was set up at the foyer. It is made up of the recycled items collected from KDU staff and students to promote the event. The participants for the GG Hunt are given a chance to guess the weight of the trash tower, one lucky winner who gets the nearest answer will walk away with an iPod shuffle. The answer will be released during the event itself.

At the end of the press conference, Mr Oon Chun Chieh, second year UNN Bachelor of Engineering student, who is the organising chairperson of the event called for more interested “Hunters” to join in this fun and meaningful occasion. So hurry to register before the closing on 10 April 2004!
