George Town, 24 February 2016 – KDU Penang University College (KDU Penang UC) unveiled plans for a 10-acre flagship campus in Batu Kawan, at a groundbreaking event officiated by Chief Minister of Penang YAB Lim Guan Eng and witnessed by representatives from the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) on 23rd February.

When completed, KDU Penang UC will be the biggest purpose-built campus in Batu Kawan, with a capacity to accommodate up to 5,000 students. It will feature a green campus with state-of-the-art facilities that are in line with the requirements of a university college, and include a myriad of informal activity areas designed to promote active discussions and learning beyond the classroom.

Commenting on plans for the new campus, Vice-chancellor of KDU Penang UC Dr Chong Beng Keok said, “KDU Penang UC will be offering programmes that are work- and community-integrated, with a strong focus on skills development and a spirit of entrepreneurship. Our aim is to prepare job-ready graduates who will hit the ground running. There is expected to be ample employment opportunities within the planned Batu Kawan Industrial Park, and we will be well-positioned to meet demand for job-ready graduates and higher skilled talents, specifically in the accounting, banking and finance and engineering sectors.”

The groundbreaking for the new KDU Penang UC campus marks a new chapter in the history of KDU in Penang, which also marks its 25th anniversary of operations this year. Recently elevated to University College status, it received its first 6-star rating in the 2014/2015 Malaysian Quality Evaluation System for Private Colleges (MyQUEST) rankings in 2015.

In 2014, KDU’s parent company Paramount Corporation Berhad (PCB) purchased 30 acres of freehold land from PDC in Batu Kawan with plans to build Penang’s first university metropolis – modelled after its successful Paramount Utropolis in Glenmarie, Shah Alam. Anchored by KDU Penang UC’s flagship campus, this new university metropolis will feature an innovative live-and-learn, work-and-play integrated lifestyle concept, unlike anything in Penang today.

Speaking at the event, Chairman and Executive Director of PCB Dato’ Teo Chiang Quan said, “Our research shows that educational components within townships act as a catalyst to create a vibrant and sustainable community. The constant influx of new students, coupled with academic and social activities, add vitality to a community. Businesses thrive from meeting their needs for homes, F&B, entertainment and leisure activities and services, while the extended community enjoys the benefits of a young, active, constantly evolving environment.

“With KDU Penang UC, Paramount Education is not just creating more opportunities for young Malaysians to get an education in sectors most relevant to the development of the state and country, but is also contributing to the overall development of Batu Kawan and the nation,” he said.

He added that with its new address in Batu Kawan, KDU Penang UC would continue building on its successful industry linkages to provide real-world education with more opportunities for internship and participation in professional activities. Similarly, the academic staff will be able to engage in joint research projects with manufacturing and commercial industries within the vicinity, which are beneficial to KDU Penang in the long run.

The presence of KDU Penang in Batu Kawan, Dato’ Teo said, is in line with the efforts of the Penang State Government and PDC to promote quality education and knowledge-based projects in Bandar Cassia.

“With KDU Penang UC’s new address, Paramount Education hopes to create a community that is inspired by learning, and a sustainable address that will help Batu Kawan and the surrounding areas grow and prosper,” he concluded.
