New double degree programmes at KDU College Penang in partnership with Korean Dongseo University

KDU 1: An agreement is sealed between KDU College Penang and Dongseo University Korea.

George Town, 19 June 2015 – Those aspiring for careers in the creative multimedia industry can now choose to pursue new double-degree programmes at KDU College Penang (KDU College). In August, the BA (Hons) Creative Multimedia and BA in Communication (Hons) majoring in New Media will begin in collaboration with Dongseo University in Korea.

Academic Head for KDU College Penang's Mass Communication Department Academic Head for KDU College Penang's Centre of Design Excellence This education pathway will offer a unique combination of expert faculty and state-of-the- art facilities from both institutions, resulting in an optimised learning experience which will prepare students to be industry-ready upon graduation.

Students pursue the first two and a half years of studies at KDU College to obtain a Diploma in Creative Media Design and / or a Diploma in 3D Animation and Motion Capture. The remaining two years of their studies will be at Dongseo University in Korea where students will then choose to major in one of the four tracks – Game Technology, Game Art, Animation or Visual Effects. Detailed courses such as the production process of 3D printing and scanning technology as well as lighting courses will be conducted as well.

Students who enrol in this programme will have the opportunity to work with world-class lecturers, including professors from well-known game companies like Rockstar and Ubisoft in the United States.

Students also gain real-world experience through internships, such as online and mobile games development with numerous Korean and foreign enterprises. Past students who enrolled in the 3D Animation programme had the opportunity to participate in movie production of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, “Alexander the Great” and “Saint Antonio”.

According to Dr Chong Beng Keok, Principal of KDU College, “KDU College keeps its pulse on industry trends and builds on its programmes to meet real-world needs. The new double-degree programmes provide comprehensive training in digital content production, including informatics-based methods, within the game, digital animation and audio-effect industries. By expanding on its programme offerings to meet industry demands, we offer more opportunities for our students to venture into the creative multimedia industry.”

Dongseo University has become one of Korea's top 10 universities in its specialised fields: Design, IT, Film and Digital Content. Its Digital Content course is more than 10 years old. The core of its education system is based on the business and real world requirements of the digital industry. This is in-line with KDU College’s promise, which is to nurture students to hit the ground running upon graduation.

All lecturers at KDU College’s Centre of Design Excellence (CODE), School of Arts and Social Sciences hold at least a Masters Degree with an average of eight years working or industrial experience. The college is well-equipped with professional studio facilities such as the iMac Lab, Animation Lab, InteriCAD Lab as well as Dry and Wet Studios.
