Sixteen students from secondary schools all over Penang recently took the opportunity to participate in an interesting activity called – "Let's Take A Commercial Break", which was organized by the Mass Communication Department of KDU Penang.

An activity created to cultivate interest and awareness in the advertising and broadcasting industry, it was certainly fun and educating for the students with their hard work paying off as they managed their time stringently after school over the period of three-weeks to attend scripwriting workshops, recording sessions and editing sessions at the KDU recording studio to finalize their radio commercial spots to market FRUUZE's frozen yogurt. Clips of their masterpieces were also posted on the KDU Facebook page with the participants friend going on a 'liking' frenzy on their work as part of the judging criteria of the competition was also to get the highest number of "Likes" to win the competition. As such, the competition saw entrants rallying for their friends to vote for their teams.

At the end, the judges had a meticulous time finalizing the winners as all were very competitive in their work. After much deliberation, Team SMKCB (Khor Ai Jing, You Siew Pin, Lilian Oong Sin Yi, Jessica Murthy) from SMK Convent Butterworth was crowned Champion of the event with winnings of RM600 cash and Vouchers from SIGIs. Team Rocket (Angus Loh Yi-Ern, Namora Hadi Lubis, Jeffery Yeow Teh Hiry, Adam Mukhtar B. Azlan) from St. Xavier's Institution meanwhile took the 1st Runner-up position with winnings of RM400 and FRUUZE Vouchers whereas Team The Boosters (Najidah Haziqah Bt Mohd Azhar, Lee Chalyn, Chua Yee Leng, Nor Faizah Bt Abdul Rahim) form SMK Methodist Girls' School took the 2nd Runner-up prize with winnings

worth RM200 cash and FRUUZE Vouchers.

Team leader of the winning team from Convent Butterworth, Khor Ai Jing were over the top from the team's winnings and said "When we first got together to brainstorm, there were a mix of ideas and it taught us to evaluate and select the best ideas for the team. I am also thankful to have student mentors from KDU's Mass Communication Department to guide us through the competition as it was our first time doing this".

The Program Leader for the department, Irwan Noor Hadi Dahili during the prize presentation also said, "I can see that the kids are having a blast especially during the recordings. Besides that, they have all been creative in their own way which was good as the judging was based on content, creativity, recording and editing quality and the number of votes from Facebook". Sharing the same view, Academic Department Head for Mass Communication Ms Felicia Aw also commented that this competition has unearthed much interest and budding talents for the future broadcasting and advertising industry which is what the mass communication department in KDU is really about.

It was certainly an all round enriching experience for the participants as they all went home winners as their biggest prize of all was being exposed early to the entertaining and interesting world of mass communication. This is important with the industry growing by leaps and bounds in the country for the past 15 years and is fast becoming the next big thing in the career interest of the Gen Ys of today.

Keen on this career path? Students who are interested to pursue their interest in this industry may consider pursuing their education in KDU's Diploma of Mass Communication program where they undertake subjects under a compact and strict regime of training assignments such as voice training, DJ announcing, digital recording production and post production editing, music editing, commercial or jingle production and more. We are currently accepting students for August 2012 intake.
