Youths get FUN-THAI-TIC experience with KDU’s Holiday English program

Based on Wikipedia statistics, the English language is the world's most widely used language with over 1.8 billion users worldwide. This proves the importance of the language as an international medium for communication. As the premier education provider in the Northern Region, KDU Penang's Centre for English Language has always been at the forefront of innovative teaching methodologies that has helped local and international students improve their command of English for 17 years.

Evidence of this is once again demonstrated recently when KDU Penang once again hosted 2 groups of Thai students aged between 7-12 and 13-18 respectively for its renowned fun-filled Holiday English Course on the 7 - 25 October 2013. Especially popular amongst the Southern Thai students, this customized English Language enhancement programme is conducted in fun and interactive ways where students can learn through role plays, drama games and various thematic approaches during the convenience of their annual school holidays.

The hallmark of KDU's Holiday English Program has always been its experiential learning activities and each of it proved to be enlightening for the students as it each taught the students a different set of skills. For example, in one of the activities "Let's Go on a Holiday", students had the opportunity to travel around the world through colourful maps and photos and present and describe them to enhance their speaking, reading and writing skills. There were also many different integrated language activities with exciting themes like "Food...Glorious food..." where students were exposed to vocabularies related to food while at the same time having the opportunity to be a Chef for a day with a hands-on baking and cupcakes decoration workshop.

The program also included pragmatic learning activities such as the "Fashion & Shopping" workshop in which they got to experience the skills and thrills of bargain shopping. "It is good to see kids learn how to express opinions as well as describe and bargain", said Ms Koek Shin Yi who is the program project leader as well as a lecturer for the Centre for English Language.

Ms Koek's co-coordinator for the program, Mr Sean Ooi also sang praises for the program and said, "Programs like this make learning English a truly enjoyable journey as our Holiday English Course is designed in such a way that the students do not just pick up or enhance their English speaking abilities but also enthuse their creativity, interest and talent as well through different experiential learning workshops."

The program ended with a joyous certificate presentation. For Thai students who came, they certainly brought home lots of pictures and happy memories besides the abundance of English language enhancement skills that they have gathered.
