KDU Penang University College Triumphs in Toastmasters Challenge

George Town, 28 March 2018: SPEAKING in public is nerve-wracking for many, but imagine getting on stage and not knowing what you are required to speak on until everyone is looking at you. The Table Topics is a long-standing tradition of the Toastmasters, designed to help members hone their ability to organize their thoughts quickly and answer confidently to impromptu questions and topics on stage.

KDU Penang University College (KDU Penang) student Bryant Oon aced the challenge recently in the Toastmasters Joint Areas S2 and S5 International Speech and Table Topics Contests 2018.

“I honestly did not expect to win as this was my first time going up against so many other experienced speakers. I was nervous and anxious throughout the contest. Competing at club level is very, very different from the area level as I had to go up against people who work as Emcees, Motivational Speakers, Students, Leaders and Engineers. I felt the utmost joy and was shocked when my name was called to receive the prizes,” said the jubilant Oon.

He bagged the first prize for the Table Topics and second prize of the International Speech at the club level, and at the area contests, Oon again took the victor’s cup at the Table Topics contest and the third prize at the International Speech event.

“When we are given the Table Topics theme on stage, we must begin speaking in less than 10 seconds and we are expected to speak for 1.5 to two minutes. It’s a challenging event,” he added.

He said his speech topic at the club level was ‘Music of My Heart” and at the area level, it was “It’s okay”. Oon’s next challenge is the division level contest and said his preparations are “coming along swimmingly”.

“I definitely feel proud standing on stage as a mere student of KDU Penang,” he added.

Leong Mi-Chelle, Head of the Department of Languages, expressed her pride in Oon.

“I believe that the School of Communication and Languages gives a valuable platform for Oon to excel in communication and public speaking,” she said.

Leong added that the Department of Languages regularly pushes students with strong potential to participate in various competitions to gain experience, skill and track record.
