Young minds impressed lecturers at Games Design Challenge 2014

Organised by KDU Penang Information Technology Division, secondary schools student were invited to take part in the Games Design Challenge (GDC) 2014 which was held on 19 July at KDU (Penang campus).

It was the 4th consecutive year GDC has been running to expose high school students to IT as well as to instil their interests in computer games.

“The event was organised in a fun-filled atmosphere with lots of excitements and challenges. It gives an opportunity for students from both Science and Arts streams an opening to understand what contributes to a good computer game as well as to apply their IT knowledge, creativity and skills, ” explained Danny Chen, an IT lecturer of KDU.

SMJK Chung Ling emerged as the big winner for Games Design Challenge 2014 as two of their teams was crowned Champion (Team Random: Ong Sheng Xun and Poh Chi Jun) and consolation (Team 4096: Edwin Chin Yan Yin and Jason Lim Tau Yi) respectively.

Presenting the prizes was Mr Joshua Thomas, our Academic Department Head of Information Technology. Joshua was impressed with the contestants’ quality of work and achievements; he commented that the event actually promoted interests among young minds in the IT field with specific inclinations towards Games Design and Technology which is a fast growing technology in Malaysia.

Danny concluded and further elaborated that computer and video games industry which covers game console hardware, software, online, mobile and PC games actually generated USD93billion in 2013 and is expected to exceed USD111 billion in 2015 as reported in Gartner, 2013.
