KDU Penang’s Class of 2013 graduate in style!

KDU's graduation affair has always been a pivotal annual event for its calendar year. 2013 was no different with the KDU Education Group celebrating its 30th anniversary in style with another memorable moment to observe with KDU Penang proudly presenting the scrolls to a total of 780 graduates during its 20th Graduation Ceremony on 29 September 2013 recently at the Bayview Beach Resort.

Graduating students from 23 different programs with 9 different schools, Dr. Chong Beng Keok, CEO and Principal of KDU Penang congratulated all the graduates for making KDU Penang proud of what they have achieved and also expressed her gratitude to the academic staff and supporting teams for their untiring efforts and dedication towards improving the students' employability in the industry. She challenged the graduates to further improve their attribute, skills and knowledge and further commented, "To strengthen the quality of our graduates, KDU Penang's program directions have always catered to the needs of the workplace and employment opportunities. This year, KDU Penang formed an International Quality Assurance Board which consists of various academics from renowned universities to assist KDU in strengthening its academia quality. I would like to also thank our prestigious university partners from Switzerland and UK such as IMI, Keele and Northumbria University who have improved the recognition of our graduates through the advancement in their university rankings as well as the throngs of universities around the world who have continued to grant affiliations to our programs which allows our students advance standings into our programs."

Also present at the ceremony to present the awards to the graduates areDr. Khong Yoon Loong, Vice Chancellor of the KDU University College in Damansara Jaya, Mr. Gavin Caldwell of the IMI University Centre in Switzerland, from the UK, Dr. Lyn Karstadt from the University of Hertfordshire, Mr. David Bell from Northumbria University, Prof. David Shepherd of Keele University who were present to give away the special awards and academic prizes as well ascorporate sponsors such as Mr. Andy Ho of the University of Oracle who was present to give away the Oracle Best Overall Achievement Award.

A selected group of graduates stand out from the rest with Ms. Ong Bee Suat from the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts and Mr. Danaraj A/L Ram Kumar from the School of Engineering, Science and Technology who were both selected as KDU Valedictorians for 2013. Praised and coveted by her lecturers and peers alike, Ms. Ong Bee Suat who plans to be a 6 Star hotel chain GM next time is graduating with 1st Class Honors for the IMI Bachelor of Arts in International Hotel & Tourism Management program. She is also the recipient for the Swiss IMI Best Overall Achievement Award for Hospitality and Tourism Program, Swiss IMI Best Dissertation Award for the Bachelor of Artsin International Hotel & Tourism Management Program to go along with the Best Overall Student Award for the KDU School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts. A member of Young Skål International Penang, Bee Suat was actively involved in organizing various events such as the 5th Annual Power Chef Competition and KDU Malaysia Book of Records event in 2012, 5th Asia Pacific Tourism Promotion Organization Forum in 2012 as well as numerous career talks related to Hospitality and Tourism for Tourism Malaysia. Delighted with the recognition for her efforts, Beng Suat was grateful for KDU's thorough training and also highlighted her lecturers' emphasis on not memorizing books and formulas, but to find themselves as an individual and to use those lessons and skillsets that they have learned to serve the people and the community in her valedictory speech.

The positive description of Bee Suat's KDU experience was also echoed by Mr. Danaraj A/L Ram Kumar, KDU's other Valedictorian for 2013 who is graduating with a CGPA of 3.94 for the KDU Diploma in Computer Studies program. A Microsoft Technology Associate under the Microsoft Student Partner program which does Microsoft Software training for various student and professional bodies, this self-starter also represented KDU in several national level based competitions such as the MDeC -MSC Malaysia IHL Business Plan Competition 2011/2012 where he and his partner were the 3rd place winners for the Business Idea Category, HSBC's Young Entrepreneur Business Plan National Level Competition 2012 and the MNCC Computing Challenge, Institute of Higher Learning - National Level Competition 2012 where KDU emerged Champion for the competition. A President of the KDU Computer Club during his college days, Danaraj is a student leader who enthusiastically organized many events and workshops throughout his studies with KDU. "I've learned a lot within the past 2 years which helped me to discover who I am and realize my hidden talents and potentials. More so, I was given opportunities to develop my interpersonal skills and leadership. It was truly priceless experiences for me." said Danaraj appreciatively. He wins the Oracle Best Overall Achievement Award for the Diploma in Computer Studies besides the Best Overall Student Award for the KDU's of School of Engineering, Science and Technology.

A thoroughly enjoyable whole day affair, the graduation ceremony concluded joyous scenes of graduates tossing their mortarboards into the air, cheering and welcoming the next adventurous and challenging milestone of their life.
