A ‘Hard Rock’ experience at KDU College Penang

40 students from KDU Penang's Mass Communication Department had a 'Hard Rock' experience at the Hard Rock Own It Challenge T-Shirt Design Contest held on 23rd of June 2013 at its campus. The fun filled event, which was jointly organised by Hard Rock Hotel Penang and the Mass Communication Club of KDU Penang, was thronged with curious onlookers comprising both the college community as well as the public that had gathered to cheer on participants as they had to cut, stitch and sew their own version of Hard Rock Hotel Penang's famous T-Shirts to the pulsating beat of rocking music, at KDU Penang's campus foyer.

Action packed from start to finish, participants during the preliminary round of the contest were given 60 minutes to re-design a Hard Rock Hotel Penang Classic T-Shirt and dress up their model on the spot using their own tools such as scissors, pins, accessories, fabric markers and sewing materials. Only 6 students made to the finals, which will be held during the Miss Hard Rock Penang Pageant on 24th August 2013 at Hard Rock Hotel Penang.

The selected finalists, Banana Lee, Olivia Joan, Zane Yoon Yi Shun, Nur Anasuhah, Sky and Khor Cheng Hui, will compete in a 'Runway' format that comes with attractive prizes such as a Rock Star Holiday for 2 at Hard Rock Hotel Penang, which is a 2-day, 1-night stay at a Seaview deluxe room complete with breakfast worth RM1160 as well as Rock Shop gift packs worth RM100 each, all courtesy of Hard Rock Hotel Penang.

Ms. Grace Chiam, Marketing Communications Manager of Hard Rock Hotel Penang, who judged the event was full of praise for the organisation of the event. She further added, "Being an event to promote our unique Hard Rock brand amongst youth, we are pleased by the good response received. The students of KDU Penang's Mass Communication Department must be commended for their organising skills, and for helping to raise awareness about the event. Also, the creative designs by the participants on our classis T-shirts were great!"

Ms. Evelyn Lim, Academic Head for KDU Penang's Mass Communication Department was also pleased with the outcome of the event. "The event gave our Mass Communication Club student members a chance to practice their event planning and management skills for 'live' industry events and this resonates well with our policy of implementing experiential learning activities in our teaching and learning initiatives. It is also good to see everyone having a great time at this event."
