Young Robots Go Green! KDU College Penang and The Penang Science Cluster Berhad organizes Green Robotic Challenge for students

KDU College Penang and the Penang Science Cluster Berhad organized its second annual robotics challenge on 29 June 2013 with the KDU - PSC Green Robotics Challenge 2013. Held in KDU Penang's campus, the event which was graced by the Chief Minister of Penang himself, Yang Amat Berhormat Tuan Lim Guan Eng drew the participation of almost 80 primary and secondary school students from all over Penang. Drawing on a 'Green' theme for 2013, this yearly event is the partial fruit of a successful collaborative initiative by the Penang Science Cluster or formerly known as Penang Science Council which started off in 2011 with the training of Penang's secondary school students by professional Penang based industry engineers in an effort to generate an increased interest in science amongst the youth.

Pioneered by Mr. Yew Tian Tek who is the Penang Science Cluster Berhad Sustainable Education & Learning Pillar Leader as well as Managing Director of Motorola Technology Sdn Bhd, the PSC quickly roped in KDU College Penang in 2011 which had a long standing reputation in tertiary engineering education as its education partner then to train its team of voluntary engineers in conducting robotics workshops for the schools in Penang. Together with various industry supports such as Sasbadi Sdn. Bhd which provided the Lego Robotics sets, its cluster initiatives have grown by leaps and bounds and have a stable training base now in almost all the major schools in Penang. Mr. Yew is exceptionally pleased with this and stated that it's moving well to achieve its objective of enhancing the youth's interest in the engineering industry and scientific community. The program which blends science and creativity through robotics study, has also been identified as an excellent platform by its partnering schools in steering young children towards science and mathematics which an important education component towards nation building.

Dr Chong Beng Keok, CEO & Principal of KDU College Penang in her speech, also addressed the industry leaders to play an active role in educating and training students to work towards a sustainable future. She highlighted the evolution of robotics in ensuring a greener public for the future and said, "This year we went for a 'Green' theme for our annual robotics challenge with the mission to educate students about the important role robotics will play in recycling. The engineering department in KDU Penang led by Dr. Yeap has gone to intricate lengths in designing a challenge race that is based on managing environmentally recyclable materials. The lessons the participants will pick up from this competition are essential as we have to inspire and enthuse the youths in science and engineering through promoting green ideas and relating them as enrichment to our daily lives, industry and society."

This year's PSC – KDU Green Robotic Challenge was extra challenging with the green functionality of the robots thrown into the mix and the participants certainly did not disappoint as they showcased their creative robotic designs and engineering skills to win the various stages of the challenge. In the primary school category, ecstatic scenes were visible from the students who were seen cheering for the fastest team in its Robot Marathon. The game which is adapted from the Formula 1 Race, used smart phone NXT apps to control the robot to race the fastest lap from the grid position. Meanwhile, the secondary school participants had a field day constructing their robots in the "Design of the NXT Robot" challenge. Upon completion, their robots competed to pick and drop objects around a circuit course whereas the second challenge required robots to pickup recycled items such as used cans, newspapers and other recycled items and place them into designated recycling areas.

Dr. Yeap who is KDU Penang's Academic Head for Engineering also commended the participant's effort and said, "This competition helps to fulfill the nation's dream to create a better environment. It is hoped that this competition will continue to grow in strength over the coming years by motivating the future generation to become part of the effort in recycling and fostering a more curious mind towards new innovation and invention in our students".

Yang Amat Berhormat, Tuan Lim Guan Eng the Chief Minister of Penang who was on hand to personally check out the competition and hand out the prizes to the winners also stressed on the importance for youths to appreciate nature through innovative ideas in robotics innovations. This is in tandem with the Penang State Governments' vision to put Penang on the map as a developed state for the manufacturing sector but with a 'green' edge in mind.
