KDU College Penang’s innovative teaching methodology helps students improve their command of English

For more than 16 years, the Centre for English Language at KDU College Penang has always been at the forefront of innovative methodologies that help students improve their command of English language. Recently, more than twenty students who enrolled for the Elementary, Intermediate and Higher Intermediate English courses participated in a drama that was an integral component of their intensive English course.

The highlight of the drama presentation was the opening dance performed by students of Satit's Bilingual School of Ransit University, Thailand. Energetic yet elegant, the students mesmerised the audience as they danced to the soft rhythm of traditional Thai music. The students from the intensive English course were up next, with three well choreographed plays entitled "Rock! Sword! Firecracker", "Snow White and the Queen" and "Little Red Riding Hood". The plays proved to be highly creative as the titles suggests to the delight and approval of the audience.

Ms. Jasamine Ooi, the Department Head of the Centre for English Language who was clearly impressed by her students' performance, said during the prize presentation ceremony that students who participate in the drama-learning component often experienced an improvement in their reading and comprehension. "Educational drama and role-play are viable teaching and learning methods we use and this helps to develop skills and knowledge to give the student a better approach towards grasping new challenges for higher education" Ms. Jasamine added.

Ms Jasamine Ooi further pointed out that KDU College Penang's English Centre has also been regularly conducting Holiday English Language Courses for visiting students from neighbouring countries, and that there are currently 12 students attending the Holiday English Language Course and another group comprising 21 students who will be attending the course in April. The duration of the courses are from one week to a month. To create more fun and excitement for the students, Baking & Beverage Skills workshops, integrated activities in Science & Technology and Fun with Art and Craft classes have been included in the holiday program.
