The KDU Education Group celebrates its 30th Anniversary this year and while the popular brand has grown by leaps and bounds from its beginning as a tertiary education provider to a secondary, primary and international school education specialist as well at this present time, the achievements of its students and alumni have always been the cornerstone of their success.
A prime example of this fact can be seen again with the recent successes of 2 KDU College Penang students. One of them is KDU's pre-university student Ho Shou Hao who recently scored 4'a' in the recent Cambridge Advanced Subsidiary Level examinations. While KDU Penang may have a lot of top scorers for the GCE A-Level examinations, Shou Hao's success was extra special compared to the rest as he did it with a subject score percentile of 91,92,93 and 95. This was even further extraordinary as he also has 113 out of 120 score in TOEFL ibt and scores of 750,750 and 780 out of 800 for mathematics 1, 2 and physics respectively in the SAT subject test. His scores easily make him amongst the top few in the world for the respective categories and to put the icing on the cake, he was also designated as a Chancellor's scholar by the University of British Columbia.
Shou Hao's winning smile says it all and with a perfect score in his hands, he beamed proudly as he shared his success story. The person of most significance in his life is the father who has been his source of inspiration. "He had always championed the habit of never asking questions when one can look up the solutions himself", he said which explains the independent nature Shou Hao has.
A natural born leader, Shou Hao had set a goal to pursue a career in a software company before he starts working on a thesis for a master's degree or PHD within the first five years. Although he had worked hard for these outstanding results, Shou Hao insisted that credit should also go to his dedicated lecturers, namely his Senior lecturer Mr. Low Chee Soon and Mr. Ewen Yeoh, the Academic Department Head at Centre of Pre University Studies. They responded to Shou Hao's modesty in the same fashion and said "It's been a pleasure to teach such a persistent and hard working scholar. Our journey together with him has been meaningful and I hope he continues to pursue his recent hobby and career dream in programming. After all, there is a saying that happiness is not a goal, it is a by-product" according to Mr. Yeoh Ewe Aun.
From academia to curricular success, another KDU Penang success story recently was Low Chin Leong, an undergraduate in the KDU – UNN BSc. (Hons) in Computing Studies program who was recently among the Top 5 Winners in the DiGi Challenge for Change - Ideation Finale on the 21st of February 2013. He took home RM5000 cash and an Android mobile device. His Malaysian-inspired app idea called "Classic New Game", in the "Discovering Together" category brought him to glory in the competition. According to Ching Leong, the idea of creating this app comes from the joy of rediscovering Malaysia's traditional games through the transformation of these timeless classics into modern mobile apps. "This new app will also have the ability to help today's kids learn more about Malaysia's traditional games so that it will not be forgotten", he said. Ching Leong is also delighted to be in the running for the Prime Minister's Award and is vying for the idea to be idealized into a mobile app in the future.
Equally proud and delighted with these students' achievements is KDU College Penang Principal, Dr. Chong Beng Keok. An advocate of high quality teaching and learning, Dr. Chong commented that it is achievements like these that continue to drive throngs of students into KDU's programs every year. As such, high-school leavers must choose wisely when it comes to the selection of their preferred tertiary education institution.
