The College that truly cares hosts Charis Hospice Christmas celebration concurrently with its Open Day

KDU College Penang's Open Day on the 15th and 16th of December 2012 was deemed a great success judging from the positive response shown by approximately 200 students. Some even came very early to make enquiries and enroll for their preferred academic course of study.

Among the first few students to register on the first day were Balan a/l Sandramorgan who enrolled for the ever popular KDU Diploma in Mass Communication and Ooi Kong Jie who enrolled for the KDU Diploma in Business program. Apparently, they had already decided earlier that KDU College Penang was the preferred college to pursue their tertiary education. Ooi Kong Jie, a former student of SMJK Chung Ling is satisfied with his choice because, "I heard from my friends that KDU is renowned for its high ranking business programs and that's why I chose KDU College Penang without the slightest hesitation." There was frenzy at the bursary's payment counter as only the first 20 students to register at the Open Day were given an exclusive gift, which was an autographed badminton racquet by KDU's Brand Ambassador, Dato' Lee Chong Wei.

Many of the Form 5 school leavers who attended the Open Day participated in an aptitude test using a self-assessment portal to gauge which career path best suited them. According to KDU College Penang's Marketing & Communications Manager, Mr. Neoh Soon Ken, "Students today have a tougher time on deciding their career path due to an abundance of various tertiary programs that are readily available in the market. Parents of today's Generations Y and Z are also more open to their children pursuing whichever academic course appealed to them. To help guide students in making the right choice, we designed an aptitude test portal to gauge their possible career path based on their personality traits. We found the findings to be accurate as they mirror the same as ours, from similar tests that we too had taken earlier".

KDU College Penang's School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts is especially renowned for its highly sought-after programmes due to its reputation for producing the best graduates in the hotel and restaurant business. Potential students and parents were clearly impressed with our investment in industry standard facilities such as a new Careme and Escoffier Butchery and Pastry kitchen to help facilitate budding chefs to learn their trade.

Visitors to our famed kitchens during the Open Day were also taken by surprise as we had concurrently hosted an afternoon Christmas Tea Party for more than 100 guests from the Charis Hospice. The event was organized by KDU's School of Nursing and Allied Health as part of their public service training to bring great joy and cheer to the Home's members aside from raising funds to support activities for Charis Hospice's cancer patients. There was a spirit of festivity in the kitchens as KDU College Penang's team of chefs prepared sumptuous food entrees such as spring-roll, bread-pudding, fried noodles and club sandwiches while Christmas jingles filled the air. Both staff and guests enjoyed a Gangnam style dance performance by the School's nursing students.

Ms. Viviane Chin, the Academic Department Head for KDU College Penang's School of Nursing and Allied Health said, "We are glad to be part of this extensive programme, our student nurses are attached to this non-profit organization to assist and apply their technical knowledge for patients in the home-based nursing care in order to create a more caring society and instill volunteerism". Dr Chong Beng Keok, CEO and Principal of KDU College Penang who also graced the event and joined in the festivities, encouraged the members of the public to do their bit for charity for the betterment of the community.

According to Mr Kew Chii Shiang who is a Board Member of the Charis Hospice, the centre has taken care of about 800 patients since its establishment eight years ago. The patients are mainly cancer patients residing on Penang island. The centre essentially provide free palliative home-care that is undertaken by a medical team that also educates cancer stricken patients in areas such as pain control. Mr Kew expressed his gratitude to KDU College Penang for always being an avid supporter of Charis Hospice.
