Congratulations, YOU HAVE GRADUATED! KDU’s Class of 2012 graduates tossed their hats as they mark another milestone at KDU Penang’s 19th Academic Convocation

It was a sight to behold as the hall erupted with the biggest cheers followed by students tossing their tasseled mortarboards in the air. There was an air of happiness mixed with a sigh of relief as a congregation of KDU graduates excitedly hovered in the hall at the Equatorial Hotel, Penang on their momentous day.

 

The 19th edition of KDU College Penang's Graduation Day saw a total of 790 graduates receiving the scrolls that they had worked so hard to attain as they stood proudly in front of family and friends to celebrate their achievements. These students hailed from the 9 academic departments of the 4 different schools of KDU College Penang namely the School of Arts & Social Sciences, School of Nursing and Allied Health, School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts and School of Engineering, Science & Technology.

For the past 21 years, the college has pride itself of being able to produce world-class graduates that are competitive in their relevant industry. Although many of the students pursue their degrees locally, they have the benefited from KDU's ever expanding world recognition and list of affiliated universities which has enabled them to obtain certificates and degrees from the prestigious KDU's foreign university partners such as the Switzerland IMI University Centre as well as UK's Northumbria University and Keele University.

New Group Managing Director & CEO of Paramount Corporation Berhad which also owns the KDU Education Group, Mr Chan Say Yeong flew in from Kuala Lumpur just to attend the event and presented the Valedictorian Awards to two deserving students namely Khor Ying Jia from the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts and Lim Seong Peng from the School of Engineering, Science and Technology. The convocation ceremony was also graced by Mr Gavin Caldwell of the IMI University Centre, Dr Lyn Karstadt from the University of Hertfordshire, Professor Alex Stojcevski of Deakin University, Dr David Bell of Northumbria University, Professor David Shepard from Keele University and of course Dr. Khong Yoon Loong, Vice Chancellor of KDU University College in Damansara Jaya.

Dr Chong Beng Keok, Principal and CEO KDU College Penang delivered a heartwarming speech to the graduates with the message, "I encourage you to define your future with a thrilling reflection. Whether you are going off to higher studies or entering the work force, I do hope that you can continue to strive hard, to persevere, to find ways to improve yourself and to contribute back to society". She also advocate that both management and academic staff will continue to strive to equip students with knowledge and skills of the 21st century, in tandem with the 5-star quality which has been awarded to KDU Penang in the 2011 MyQuest audit exercise by the Ministry of Higher Education.

Among the proud graduates who were walking into the red carpet to receive their scrolls was Loo Jian Wen a student with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder syndrome who turned his disabilities into strength and successfully completed the popular KDU Diploma in Mass Communication programme. He thanked the Mass Communication Department of KDU for their willingness to take him in as their student two and a half years ago despite his disabilities and the lecturers' commitment and help in lectures everyday as well as the advertising company that also took him in for his internship stint. He will continue to live his dream to become a Public Relations professional as he also has received full scholarship from SHELL to pursue the KDU –UNN Bachelor of Science (Hons.) in Communications and Public Relations which is a collaborative programme with Northumbria University, UK.

Another student, Gan Yee Loong who was a scholarship recipient of the Star Education Fund, also graduated with pride cuddling the KDU Diploma in Graphic Design. His achievement was extra special as despite being hearing-impaired, he overcame his learning difficulties to be as good as the rest of his course mates by being hard working. Stating with satisfaction, he said "I am thankful to The Star and KDU for giving me this opportunity as I am now a graduate in Diploma in Graphic Design".

The main graduation ceremony also saw Valedictorian Khor Ying Jia who graduated with Bachelor of Arts International Hotel & Tourism Management 3+0 in Collaboration with International Hotel & Management Institute (IMI), Lucerne, Switzerland and Lim Seong Peng who graduated with B. Eng (Hons) Electrical & Electronic Engineering sharing a few words of wisdom and encouragement as well as their favorite college times with the convocation attendants and their fellow graduates. Both received the Valedictorian Award for their all round excellence in their academic pursuit and outstanding extracurricular involvement and thanked KDU greatly for the dedicated tutelage and support of their lecturers that lead towards their success.

This year's ceremony also marked a record-breaking feat for KDU Penang as 9 of their business degree students were awarded First Class Honors by Keele University which is currently collaborating with KDU in offering the KDU-KEELE 3+0 B.A in Business Management with Double Major program. This program which is one of the most popular business degree programs in Penang is also the top ranking UK Business Degree program in Northern Malaysia. As such, representatives from Keele University, UK were also beaming with the students' academic achievements as well as the response of their program in Malaysia.

The day ended with the time honored tradition of the graduates throwing their graduation caps in the air as graduands bade goodbye to one chapter of their life and welcoming the next one with enthusiasm and open arms. It was certainly a cheerful day for everyone.
