George Town, 4 April, 2015 – KDU College Penang (KDU College) was proud to host its 8th Power Chef Competition on the 4th April 2015 (Saturday) from 7.30am to 5.00pm at KDU College Penang. As the competition has been a huge success in the past 7 years; this year, registration again had opened for all secondary schools to participate.

Organised by the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts, in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and Culture (MOTAC), this competition was an educational, friendly and fun-filled culinary competition that is suitable for secondary school students who were considering carving a career in the food and beverage industry. The competition also aimed to unearth students’ hidden talents in the kitchen.

With this year’s theme “The Innovation of Culinary Arts”, the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts welcomed a total of 56 teams and 8 teachers’ team from a total of 16 schools. KDU College was proud to have had 42 sponsors sponsoring the event as well as a team of 8 culinary experts being the judges. The competition started with two preliminary rounds whereby each team was required to prepare “Finger Foods” and a “Pasta dish” based on their own creativity and with the ingredients provided by the organiser. It then ended with a final round whereby participants were required to prepare a dessert. To make the event more lively and challenging, the final round was also opened for all teachers to participate. Teachers were required to prepare a dish individually following the theme “Malaysian Staple Food Challenge - Brown Rice”.

Points were awarded based on aspects such as hygiene, taste and texture, product display, creativity, mise-en-place, cooking skills and techniques. The top three teams for the Student category had won cash prizes worth RM1000, RM600 and RM400 respectively with other attractive prizes for the winner of the Teacher category. There was also a special prize given to students with the ‘Best Dish’. Every participant was awarded with a certificate of participation.

KDU College was proud to have Mr. Mohd Mazlan Bin Hashim, Assistant Director of Ministry of Tourism Malaysia Penang as the event’s VVIP. According to Mr Mazlan, the Tourism Malaysia, Penang is proud to be in partnership with KDU College. He said, “In 2014, nearly 630,000 foreign tourists and local tourists respectively have visited Penang. The number tourist is expected to grow exponentially from 2015 onwards.” He added, “Food and Beverages industry is seen to be one of the fastest growing industries in Penang. With the collaboration with KDU College, we hope to see more young people with hidden talent or share a passion in culinary to rise up and strengthen the F&B industry here in Penang.”

At the end of the day, Rachelle Wong Min Hung and Yeoh Khye Xin from Penang Chinese Girls Private High School bagged the top prize which was RM1, 000.00 cash with medal and certificate. First runner up also went to a team from Penang Chinese Girls Private High School. Jolene Ooi Mei Chern and Sim Rou Yi went home with RM600.00 cash and medal, while the second runner up went to SMK Permatang Pasir students, Mohd. Rais B. Abd Rahim and Mohd Edzhan Bin Zainol Abidin who took home a medal each and RM400.00 cash. Besides, top dishes for pasta goes to SMK Penang Free. As for finger food, top dishes goes to Penang Chinese Girls Private High School.

It’s indeed another effort by KDU Penang in playing its part to produce professional young chefs through events like this as well as through its chef training programmes offered by the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts. As Penang is well known as a food paradise by many locals and foreigners, the food and beverage industry is a booming industry and we are here to ensure that the younger generations of chefs from Penang will continue to uphold its reputation.
