KDU wins big at Vietnam Culinary Challenge 2015

George Town 30 April 2015 – KDU College Penang (KDUPG)’s School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts has made its students and faculty proud by winning 22 awards at the recent 6th Vietnam Culinary Challenge 2015 (VNCC), including the coveted Best Culinary Establishment Award 2015, the college also took home 12 medals and 9 Diplomas.

The 6th Vietnam Culinary Challenge 2015 is part of Food and Hotel Vietnam, is a renowned competition for the Vietnamese culinary industry. Organised by Singapore Exhibition Services and a local organiser, VCCI Exhibition Service, the event was held at Saigon Exhibition and Convention Center (SECC).

Presided over by a panel of highly accredited chefs from around the region, the competition aims to promote higher culinary standards in the country as well as provide an opportunity for participants to gain experience, share expertise and communicate with the regional and national culinary community. The competition, now into its 6th year, also aims to inspire chefs and aspiring chefs to better meet the demands and expectations of consumers, by encouraging creativity amongst up-and-coming chefs. The VNCC has proven to be a platform for both local and international culinary talents to exchange ideas and knowledge and provides culinary practitioners the opportunity to showcase their expertise to the industry and the public.

Held from 21 – 23 April 2015, the competition this year attracted participants from USA, Malaysia, Singapore, Poland, Spain and Thailand.

Topping the table of award recipients, KDUPG took home The Best Culinary Establishment Award 2015. The award goes to the team with the highest points amongst participating schools, companies and hotels, or professional industry practitioners. KDUPG also took home 3 Silver and 9 Bronze medals as well as 9 Diplomas.

Students showcased their skills in a myriad of categories including categories devoted to Pasta, Chicken, Lamb, Beef, Seafood and Fish Hot Cooking, Carving and Chinese cuisine. Senior student Hong Che Ming, won a Silver medal with his Display Fruit Carving, and a Silver medal for his dish ‘Trio Pasta of Creamy Seafood Vermicelli with Prawn, Mussel and Scallop, Pan-Seared Salmon and Pesto Penne’. Lecturer Muhammad Faizal won a Silver medal for his Live Fruit Carving display titled ‘Secret Garden’.

Ms. Cindy Loh, Academic Department Head for the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts expressed her pride and pleasure at the school’s performance, saying, “Awards such as these reflect the skills, talent and determination of KDUPG’s students. On top of this, to win the Best Culinary Establishment 2015 award in an international competition is truly a significant milestone for us as a school; it shows that we are on the right track when it comes to developing our students, and preparing them to hit the ground running upon graduation.”
