George Town, 15 May 2015 – Mass Communications students from KDU College Penang (KDU College) organised their first ever Flicks Fiesta 2015 themed “Flash of Dreams”, a film showcase and competition designed to encourage and inspire aspiring, screenwriters and filmmakers in Penang.

Co-organised by Northumbria University and in collaboration with Penang Women’s Development Corporation (PWDC), the event at KDU College’s auditorium attracted participations from secondary schools’ students, colleges and universities in the state.

Flicks Fiesta 2015 kicked off with a public screening and ended with an Award Ceremony, the latter of which was graced by numerous Guests of Honour including YB Chong Eng, Chairperson of PWDC and ADUN for Padang Lalang; Dr. Wang Changsong, Lecturer from Universiti Sains Malaysia, as the Head of Jury; Maizul Affendy B. Baharudin, Graphic Designer, Malaysian Visual Artist and Conceptual Arts Performer and Educator; Ian Barbosa, Freelancer Videographer; and Aloyah Bakar, CEO of PWDC.

Flicks Fiesta 2015 ran two contest categories. The first category was for high school students while the second category, for university and college students. Entries were judged by a panel of industry experts, presided over by Dr Wang Chang Song as the Head of Jury.

Secondary school students participated in the first category by creating a 30-second Public Service Announcement video. A workshop was held earlier on in the month of April. Three awards were given out in this category: Best Overall Public Service Announcement Award, Most Facebook “Likes” Award and PWDC Gender Equality Award. Tertiary school students participated in the second category, by submitting either a 20- minute short film or documentary on a topic of their choice. Six awards were given out in this category: Best Short Film Award, Best Documentary Award, Best Editing Award, Best Cinematography Award, Best Creative Idea Award and PWDC Futures Award.
