KDU College Penang recently welcomed 44 students aged between 8 years and 18 years from province of Satun, Thailand who were on their inaugural visit to Penang on 9th April 2011 to participate in the KDU Holiday English Course. Designed to be a fun filled learning activity, the students' faces lighted up as they began exploring and getting to know each other during the ice breaking session packed with games and fun-filled language activities.

Each activity proved to enlightening for the students as the individual workshops each taught the students a different set of skills. For example, in one of the activities to boost their language skills, every student had the opportunity to portray characters which required them to practice effective pronunciations while exploring phonetics and phonology. The students also listened eagerly as lecturers briefed them during a session of "Fun With Words" to enhance their vocabulary through learning idioms, tongue twisters and jazz chants.

Opening the doors to the kids' minds to concepts and ideas of arts and business, the school kids also attended Eco Workshops where they make eco bags from recyclable items for sale at the college, thus enhancing their persuasive and presentation skills. Students also had fun practicing their negotiation skills to be used in the sales pitch of their bags.

In addition to grooming these students into fluent speakers, they were also treated to a visit to the Batik Factory whereby they experience the techniques and processes involved in making 'hand-drawn' batik. According to Jasamine Ooi, KDU's Academic Department Head for Centre for English Language, "This Holiday English programme gives participants a chance to learn through site visits as well as encourage cultural exchange. We are delighted that the parents of these children recognize our experience in teaching the English language."

The students were also having a gala time in KDU Penang's fully equipped 5 star kitchens as they put their baking skills to the test and learned to be a Chef for a day. They certainly found out that running a kitchen is certainly no piece of cake as they learned to bake scones from scratch besides having opportunity to concoct various types of beverages in the kitchen.

One the children's most favorite sessions was the "Sing,Sing" session where music appreciations comes to life using the English language as they also did it "karaoke style" at the same time!

The programme ended after a telematch game with the students thoroughly enjoying their stay with these important lessons as well as the chance to explore Penang which is home to a colorful history and people of various cultures. They certainly brought home souvenirs, lots of pictures and lots of happy memories. Thank you and see you again next time!
