HOPE Worldwide Penang + KDU brings reading programme to underprivileged children

KDU College continues to encourage lifelong learning through its reading programme recently on 19th March 2011 for underprivileged children from Lebuh Macallum, Penang. Joining friends from Hope Worldwide Organization Penang, this community service was initiated in 2009 with the aim to improve the reading skills, offering equal access to information and knowledge through materials and activities. Besides reading materials, volunteers also played games to help them cope with learning.

A selection of teaching approaches are used to help children raise confidence in the usage of English. They include group singing and individual mentoring in reading books. Interesting games and fun activities such as unscrambling words, spelling and making sentences using words depicting different parts of speech were part of lessons taught. The Lebuh Macallum children seem to enjoy the ice-breaking session where each of them get to know one another. Thereafter, they proceeded to group activities and learning vocabulary words. Each child were paired with a mentor to help them through reading a book and explaining the gist of story.

Wilson Wang, a student volunteer has this to say, "I would like to thank KDU College, and The Hope Foundation for giving me such a precious opportunity to help the students who were involved in the HOPE program. Building characters, making a difference with positive impact is good for the young generation".

A handful of student volunteers have been equally inspired after spending time with the children as it helps them understand children more.

Joey Ariel Tan, Programme Executive from Hope Worldwide Penang said the reading programme has been planned with a calendar of activities until December 2011. It also offers a free children's clinic and free Mobile Clinic. With a team of 14 volunteer doctors, about 3,053 children have benefitted from this programme.
