KDU hosts Talks on Trends and Prospects in Tourism and Hospitality Industry

KDU College Penang Campus recently hosted a talk session entitled "Trends and Prospects in Tourism and Hospitality Industry" at its premises on the 28th October 2010. Organized by students from School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts, the Magnificent and Efficient Events Team comprising of students from the hospitality program brought in a few reknowned key industry players to share their knowledge and experiences relevant to their professions.

Sharing her enthusiasm during the event, Chairman of the Magnificient & Efficient Events Team, Ms. Ann Marie Lee who is a student of the KDU Hospitality program said the objective is to create awareness amongst youths and the public about the latest trends and prospects in tourism, to gain knowledge on issues that confront the industry, to broaden their understanding on its roles and significance to the world's economy, to gain insights on appropriate careers that match individualsl interests and skills and to apply principles and practices learned.

According to Event Adviser and KDU Lecturer for the Hospitality program Mr. Rogelio P. Flores Jr, "Tourism is the world's largest industry and the prime catalyst for socio-economic development. This hospitality and tourism industry is one of the few which had not been badly hit during the ecnomic crisis."

Speaker Chef Lee Chee Onn shared during the event that being in the chef profession, there are some advantages and disadvantages. One of the advantages is that "celebrity chefs" is an upcoming trend that enables young cooks to become famous through presenting cookery advice and demonstrations via the information media such as the television. He cites example that some chefs lead a "luxury lifestyle" by reporting to work by helicopter especially those in the offshore industry.

Among the guest speakers who attended the talk are Ms. Sharilyn Chia Ai Ling from Chilli's Grill and Bar Restaurant, Ms. Lisa W.L.Wong from Thai Airways Internationaly Public Company Limited, Mr. Ramesh JC from Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa Penang, Chef Lee Chee Onn from Chefs Association of Malaysia, Penang Chapter and Mr. Johnny Goh from SKAL Organization Penang.
