Join the CODE! A familiar chant among the design students of KDU College Penang... they are famous for literally leaving their marks around Penang. From schools to parks to shopping malls and corporate landmarks, the works of the students from the KDU Centre of Design Excellence can be seen at various popular areas around Penang. Established in 2005, the department was first grouped with the Centre for Performing Arts and Mass Communication before independently branching out into 'Instituto di Design' in 2006. The Design Department at KDU College was set up with the vision to make KDU College Penang the cultural centre of Penang. To live up to the high expectation, the Design Department was set up with an in-house Gallery, Wet and Dry Studio, Interior Design Drafting room and Photography Studio to make it a home to the artistically creative and innovative minds in the region. Its famous design gallery which is aptly called The Gallery @ KDU was officially launched on 10 March 2006 by Datuk Rohana Tan Sri Mahmood, the Deputy Chairman of the National Art Gallery.

Upon its launch, the department offered 3 design programs namely the KDU Diploma in Graphic Design, the KDU Diploma in Interior Design and the KDU Diploma in Digital Art and Design, which were then converted to its present course offerings aptly called the KDU Diploma in Creative Media Design and the KDU Diploma in Interior Design. Today, the department has been renamed as the KDU Centre of Design Excellence a.k.a CODE in recognition of the growing achievements of its staff and students.
