SCHOOL HISTORY / OVERVIEW "English Language is not a difficult thing to master if you have the right teacher. We have 15 years of experience in doing exactly that." At its inception in 1996, the Centre for English Language was first known as the English Language Division. In July 2000, it merged with the Centre for Pre-University Studies under the division of school of Arts and Social Science. Later, the English Language Division separated from CPUS to become a centre on its own known as the Centre for English Language in 2002.
Today, the CEL family is made up of a pool of committed full-time teaching staff and an administrative assistant to manage the administration of the centre. This dynamic team is led by none other than Ms. Jasamine Ooi who is a 13-year veteran in educating foreign students in the Queen's English. The department specializes in its Certificate in Intensive English which comes in varying levels. It also offers its own short-term courses and corporate training programs to various industries upon demand. CEL has collaborated with industry like Altera, Seagate Sdn. Bhd., FInisar Sdn. Bhd. , Loh Guan Lye Specialist Centre, Guinness Anchor Sdn. Bhd. , Arup Juru Runding for staff training. It also promoted the use of English Language in local secondary schools throughout the year via English workshops and classes.
In 2009, CEL broadened its expertise to include teacher training in English methodology. CEL also added a feather to its cap when it was given the license to conduct the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC). It is the only centre in the northern region which hosts this test.
Over the years, more than 1,200 local and international students from over 40 countries have completed the English courses at the centre successfully. CEL's International students hail from Thailand, Indonesia, The Philippines. Mongolia, Turkmenistan, Bangladesh, Korea, Bahrain, Taiwan, Japan, China, Russia, Africa, Iran etc. Many of CEL'S graduates have successfully completed their diploma and degree in the courses of their choice, and some have joined the workforce.
