“So what is English any good for anyway?” KDU College Penang’s provocatively titled workshop draws an overwhelming response

KDU College Penang, a 17-year veteran in English Language Education, is widely renowned for its intensive English programs that are conducted at its Centre for English Language. To help students further improve their proficiency in English as well as converse more on campus grounds, the College's English Language Society recently organised an English Awareness Workshop.

The workshop that was conducted by a visiting American, Adam B. Freeman who is an English Language Consultant with the Brighton Education Group on a project designed to mentor teachers in Malaysian's Ministry of Education schools drew an overwhelming response among the student community. Titled "So what is English any good for anyway?" the workshop, which inculcated fun elements into everyday life through the use of English, was organised in conjunction with English Awareness Day at KDU College Penang.

Mindful of how education systems differ from country to country, Freeman believes that there is no right way or wrong way to learning English despite the critically based instruction method in schools being constantly frowned upon as compared to the student-centered method. According to Freeman, "When we approach the learning of a language in creative ways that critically express what we think and feel, we end up not only improving our language abilities, but ourselves as well".

The workshop also saw a few groups performing various activities such as Operatic Performance, Slam Poetry and Voice Over for Radio Broadcast as an experiential exercise to improve their communication skills. Some groups did exceptionally well in entertaining the audience but, more importantly, they delivered a fun-filled performance that was creative and displayed teamwork.

Among the audience, was a group of visiting Thai students who had enrolled at KDU College Penang for the popular KDU Holiday English Language programme. The students, aged between 8 to 17 years, learned core skills such as listening, reading and writing throughout the 2 weeks here. Ms. Jasamine Ooi, who is also the Academic Department Head for KDU's Centre for English Language, shared her thoughts as to how students attending these sessions stand to gain positive self-esteem in using the language. Said Ms. Jasamine, "Here at KDU, students get the total 'immersion' experience. The best part about learning at KDU is that we are able to customise the Program's content to suit the students' requirements. We also conduct activities that include indoor and outdoor experiences and this helps to enhance the participants' proficiency as well as develop imaginative thinkers".

Having organised many English workshops, KDU's Centre for English Language is fast gaining a solid reputation for being an all-round training English Centre. Just recently, the Centre conducted an "English for Research" workshop for fifteen academicians from the Nareasuan University of Thailand and is showing no signs of slowing down in the popularity of its Intensive English programs as well. In the long run, such activities are poised to make KDU College Penang an English education focal point in the Northern Region, which will certainly complement the institution's popular tagline that reads – EASY ENGLISH with KDU!
