The 5th Penang Chef’s Challenge 2012 - KDU’s Culinary Arts Team Shines Once Again!

The prides of KDU's culinary team have triumphed once again! We raise our glasses to toast their success in the 5th Penang Chefs Challenge 2012. Held in one of Penang's most prestigious entertainment spots and located in the world-class master planned waterfront community otherwise known as Penang's "millionaire row", this round of Penang Chefs Challenge boasts a total of 350 participants from local hotels, restaurants and institutions. The pool of participants also includes international participants which hail as far as from Disneyland Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore Junior Chef Association as well as Thailand Culinary Academy.

A team of 6 chefs were sent to represent the college this time round and the team took part in a total of 4 classes in which the team won a prize in each round they participated in. At the end of the competition, KDU swept a total of 1 gold, 2 bronzes and one Diploma.

Young KDU Chef Tong Yuan Shen became the hero of KDU in this competition when he surfaced with gold in the Class 10 – Apprentice Main Course (Poultry) round. "There has been improvement and a higher standard of product produced by most of the greenhorn category (apprentice class) participants. Penang's culinary scene is looking positive," Master Chef Otto Weibel who was also present at the competition as one of the panel of judges commented.

"It was an honour that one of our students won the gold this round in the apprentice class category. This has been a good exposure for our culinary students who participated in this competition this time," said Chef Yuzrem, one of KDU's own culinary lecturers. "The introduction of greenhorn category this year added more hype to this time's event," he added.

In preparation for the 5th Penang Chefs Challenge 2012, students have been putting in all the hours and efforts from January until the day of event to sharpen their "knives." A group of students and chef lecturers went to the extent of spending 48 hours in the kitchen to prepare their final products for Display category. Lecturers' and students' dedication to this competition paid off with them winning a prize in every category. This round of competition has given the new chefs a great exposure as well as experience in big events as such.
