ASAP FILM FESTIVAL Communication Students Use Local Independent Films to Advocate Social Change

Georgetown, 23 October 2010 – The 'Advocating Social Awareness in Penang' (ASAP) Film Festival took place at KDU College, Penang Campus today.

The event was officiated by YB Puan Lydia Ong Kok Fooi, State Youth and Sports & Women, Family And Community Development Committee of Penang in an opening ceremony.

The ASAP Film Festival is part of a campaign organized by 13 final year students from KDU College, Penang Campus, who are currently pursuing their Bachelor in Communications (Persuasive Communication) (Honours) from USM. The objective of this campaign is to advocate social awareness among Penangites via the use of local independent films during this film festival.

Five different sessions are done throughout the day comprising of short films and documentaries such as 10 Tahun Sebelum Merdeka, What Rainforest?, the 15Malaysia series and the feature film, Gadoh. These films highlight social issues that are pertinent to the local public and have been streamed into four specific themes, namely Community Awareness, The Environment, Human Rights and Racial Unity.

Members of the public who attend the screenings will be able to participate in forum discussions with guest speakers from the film industry and selected NGOs.

Project Leader, Mr. Enrique Tan Kim Hock and his team, hopes that their efforts will spark the need for Penangites to be more socially aware of current issues that surround their daily lives. Aside from the film festival, the team visited schools and institutions of higher learning to promote their campaign.

"As Communication students, we realize that there are many issues out there faced by society which has not been addressed over time. By screening these films, we would like the public to know that anyone can be a change agent and make a difference for society," said Enrique.

The first 500 participants received free door gifts in the form of eco bags, pens, notepads, etc. They are also able to purchase limited edition T-shirts and car stickers during the event. The proceeds of the merchandise will be donated to the Persatuan Perkhidmatan Komuniti Taiping (ESDA) as a form of charity.
