George Town, 17 June 2015 – It was a triumphant moment for Steven Soon, a third year student from KDU College Penang’s (KDU College) School of Art and Social Sciences when his short film “Silent Killer” won the Best Public Service Announcement (PSA) Award at the 11th Mini Film Festival 2015.

The 11th Mini Film Festival is an annual event organized by University Malaysia Sarawak’s Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts with the aim to recognize and encourage filmmaking among youths locally and internationally, while driving passion in cinematography. The glittering award night riding on the theme “The Future of Cinema” was held on the 23rd of May 2015 in UNIMAS, with live streaming on YouTube.

Soon’s short film on depression was an experiment with dark themes and suspense, to bring about public awareness in a more impacting manner. Based on his own life experiences, the video was shot with no fancy effects – just a guy staring at the camera, with a blade in his hand and a voice over. It ends with a clear message: “Depression is a silent killer. Get help immediately”. ’Silent Killer’ can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plTm5QemqJw

Soon said, “Filmmaking is all about storytelling and not the equipment. The most important thing is to be brave to try, never be afraid to ask.” He recalls KDU College’s Room 106, the broadcasting and film editing room; in which he considers a “second home”. This is where lecturers would “visit” on a regular basis to assist and guide, where all the hard work took place, where KDU College supported them with state-of-the-art tools.

KDU College’s School of Art and Social Sciences is well known for its Broadcasting, Film Making, Advertising and Photography programmes with its partner university, Northumbria University in the United Kingdom. The School is equipped with the latest technology and equipment, providing the best for its students.
