Rediscovering nations and cultures at KDU Penang’s International Day 2013

KDU College Penang's (KDU Penang) School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts celebrated International Day 2013 on 18 October 2013. The event, which was organised by the final year students pursuing the IMI Bachelor of Arts in International Hospitality and Tourism Management programme, serves as a tourism-seeding project, and is part of the coursework assessment component for the hospitality students under the event management specialization of the program.

Students and guests representing 13 different countries participated in the event based on a nationalistic theme that saw every booth displaying their country's unique gifts and souvenirs as well as their favourite delicacies and tourist attractions. The international booths included Indonesia, United States of America, New Zealand, Korea,  France, Japan, Italy, Pakistan, Iran, Morocco, Thailand and Malaysia. To befit the occasion, various cultural performances were held throughout the day.

The event was graced by Mr Loghi Dhasan, Deputy Director of Tourism Malaysia Penang; Ms Tirta, Consul of Thailand; Mr Gulko Alexander, Director of Russian Centre of Science and Culture; Mr Jason Sim of Penang Global Tourism; Mr Mir Mohd Reza Seyed Hassani, a representative from Iran and Mr Rahime Bouaziz, Director of Alliance Francaise Penang.

Ms Audrey Yew, the organizing chairperson of the event and a final year student of the IMI Bachelor of Arts in International Hospitality and Tourism Management program was overjoyed with the success of the event and thanked her Epitome team members who organized the event as well as her KDU lecturers for their guidance. She also thanked all the embassies, consulates and cultural centres who had rendered their assistance and support towards the event. She highlighted that the event was not only successful in achieving its objective of promoting various international cultures to the youth but that it was also a successful educational journey which gave her team members valuable insight about managing an event, and the importance of teamwork.

Ms Cindy Loh, Head of Department for the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts pointed out in her speech that KDU Penang has long recognized the importance of preparing students for an international environment and therefore strives to develop students who practise cultural sensitivity, maturity and diplomacy through outcome based learning assignments. As such, events such as this provide an excellent opportunity and platform for the students to display what they have learned in their lectures in an actual real life event.
