KDU College Penang's Centre for Pre-University Studies once again lived up to its reputation as a centre for educational excellence following the outstanding results achieved by its A-Level students' at the Cambridge GCE A-Level Exams.
Among the many success stories were scholarship holders Lee Chun Sian and Justin Looi Su Min, who scored 4A's* and 2A's* + 1A + 1a, respectively. Justin Looi who found pre-university studies at KDU both rewarding and exciting, is now a step closer towards realising his ambition to become a theoretical physicist. A known perfectionist, he subscribes to the philosophy that, "Work has to be done right and fast, with a positive attitude and without the need for it to be done twice". Justin looks up to his grandmother as a source of inspiration as she had successfully raised her five children on a very meager income. Such hardships have engrained in him the value of education and the need for him to maximize the opportunity given to him to excel in his studies as a KDU Scholarship recipient.
Pre-university A-Level students are normally avid readers but co-incidentally, both Chun Sian and Justin Looi are also art enthusiasts. Their shared interest had actually helped them to prepare better for their exams. "I find that through drawings I am able to concentrate better when revising", said Lee Chun Sian who now hopes to secure a scholarship to study at the National University of Singapore and realise his ambition of becoming a neurologist one day. When asked on his source of motivation in achieving such excellent results, Lee said, " My lecturers, all of whom I find very inspiring as they have always encouraged me to be the best that I can be, and in particular, I am thankful to my Senior Lecturer, Mr. Low Chee Soon who always helped me understand those challenging mathematic questions I always posed."
Mr. Ewen Yeoh, KDU College Penang's Academic Head of Pre-University studies and a 14-year veteran found the examinations to be very tough – a common view shared by other lecturers as well. "That's why" he said "I am very impressed with so many students receiving straight A's especially from the Advanced Subsidiary Level. It certainly reflects the fantastic effort that the students have put in for the exams under the diligent tutelage of our lecturers."
KDU College Penang prepares its students for holistic education through an enhanced learning experience. In the case of the College's Pre-University Department, a great deal of emphasis is placed on the legendary personalised Cambridge mentoring system as well as extra co-curricular community service activities that are essential to producing all-round Pre-University students.
