KDU develops all-rounded graduates

KDU Penang emphasises on outcome-based education as well as geting its students ready for real-life experiences. Thus, on top of equipping the students with the knowledge of their professional programmes, students are also trained with soft skills such as communication skills, and critical-thinking skills to help them organising ideas and into practice.

In July 2014, KDU Engineering and IT students left their technopreneurship mark at the IHL-MSC Malaysia Startup Challenge (i-MSC) 2013/2014.

i-MSC is a competition that allows participants from Institutes of Higher Learning (IHL) to learn about start-up plan for new ICT venture, coupled with hands-on experience and the practical aspects of entrepreneurial activities.

There are 2 categories for the competition namely Business Plan and Business Idea. Two teams from KDU Penang are among the top 6 who qualified for the final round under the business plan category.

Team “Body Guts” which is represented by Adrian Teo, Lim Wai Xiang, Goh Duo Wei and Tan Chiang Wei from the Engineering Department won the Second Runner-up and walked away with RM6,000 prize money with a trophy while team “Talk A” which consists of Ang Jin Teong from Engineering Department, Teoh Tuan Tian and Yeap Chee Yien from IT Department received a Merit Prize.

The winning piece - Body-Guts Fitness Apparel Device - is an interactive textile that measures heart rate, calorie burned and nutritional suggestion which are the essential information athlete needs towards their workout.

This ingenious product demonstrates the creativity of our engineering students in apprehending what they have learnt in class and actualising it into a functional piece. With the participation and exposure in similar competitions, they were also given the opportunity to discover the potential entrepreneur talent in them and learn the challenge of working in a cross-discipline, real-life organisation.

KDU Penang is driven by a team of dedicated and experienced lecturers on top of its advanced syllabi which were developed based on feedbacks from the industry experts in the engineering and IT industries. Our programmes are also accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency and internationally affiliated with Northumbria University in the United Kingdom.

The college is a purpose-built intelligent campus equipped with multi-million ringgit state-of-the-art facilities. For both engineering and IT programmes, facilities such as VLSI Lab, Electrical Power Lab, Electronics Lab, Communications Lab, Games and Multimedia Computing Design Labs are made accessible for the students.

KDU Penang works closely with more than 250 industrial partners to give our students the relevant exposure during their internships as well as graduate placements. On-campus interviews are also being conducted for graduates.
