George Town, March 23, 2015 - KDU College Penang's (KDU College) student Adrian Teo has emerged joint Champion of the Malaysian leg of the recent "Go Green in the City Competition 2015".

Organised by Schneider Electric, the competition challenges students to design innovative solutions for smart cities. The Malaysian leg of this global competition was held in Petaling Jaya, Selangor on 9 March 2015.

Adrian, a final year engineering degree student in KDU College, partnered University Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) student Lee Jia Ying to design a portable electric mat that harvests electricity whenever it is stepped on. The innovative design won the champion title at country level as well as RM5,000 in prize money and a challenge trophy.

KDU College will be funding Adrian in the upcoming East Asia level next month, where he will be competing with students from countries such as Cambodia, Indonesia, Korea, Myanmar and Mongolia. The winner of the East Asia region will then represent the region in the Grand Finale which will be held in Paris from 22–25 June 2015.

Speaking of his experience, Adrian said, “I have learnt that ideas are easy to come by, but feasible ideas that suit the market are a different thing altogether. KDU’s Engineering Department has provided me with the right tools and equipment to test my proposed concept to see if it works.”

He added, “It is important to think from both the technical and business perspectives in order to ensure an idea turns into a solution that also meets the criteria for commercial feasibility in terms of cost.”

At KDU College, students are taught in industry-relevant learning facilities and guided by experienced teaching faculty. In addition, they gain real-world experience through internships with KDU’s industry partners as well as global exposure through participation in competitions. This way, students at KDU College are groomed to meet industry demands when they enter the working world.

KDU College has a 95% employment rate within the first six months of graduation, as well as a strong link with more than 250 industrial partners for internship and graduate placement. On-campus interviews are also regularly conducted to boost graduate employability.
