George Town, 22 September 2015 - KDU College Penang’s (KDU College) School of Culinary Arts bagged the team gold medal in the AEC (ASEAN Economic Country) Culinary Challenge 2015 recently. Representing the KDU College team were Chef Chuah Lay Yen and Chef Darren Tan.

Held at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre from 2nd to 5th of September, the competition drew participants from Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, with two chefs representing each country. A panel of highly accredited chefs presided over the competition, two of which were Executive Sous Chef Adolf Tan of Resort World Sentosa Singapore and Intel Malaysia’s Executive Chef Audee Cheah.

“We had to prepare one allocated traditional dish from each listed ASEAN country except the one we are representing (Malaysia). There were seven dishes, and we were given four hours to prepare them. The pressure was immense but we had faith in our abilities and thankfully Darren and I pulled through!” said Chuah. Chuah stated that Cambodia’s Amok, Myanmar’s Mohinga, Singapore’s Hainanese Chicken, Philippines’ Chicken Adobo, Vietnamese-style Spring Rolls, Indonesia’s beef rendang and Thailand’s Tom Yum Goong were the challenges given”.

Ms. Cindy Loh, Academic Department Head of the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts expressed, “KDU College Penang has raised the bar with its second major success in a culinary contest by students and lecturers within this year.” It was only in April that a team of KDU College students won a staggering 22 awards in another renowned cooking competition, the prestigious 6th Vietnam Culinary Challenge 2015. “This back-to-back success is testimony of KDU College’s commitment to culinary excellence, which is reflected in our education offerings to students here,” Loh said.

KDU College’s School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts with its world class facilities is internationally recognised for its industry-relevant programmes, state-of-the-art culinary facilities and a teaching faculty made up of industry experts.
