George Town, Penang, 14 February 2015 - Students of KDU College Penang (KDU College) brought cheer and mandarin oranges to Silver Jubilee Home on a social visit during Chinese New Year.

In the weeks leading up to the visit, 50 KDU student volunteers and council members embarked on a donation drive campus-wide, successfully raising funds which went to the purchase of daily necessities for the facility, which xxx members of Penang’s elderly community call home.

During the visit, KDU student volunteers helped spring-clean the home, finishing off with the addition of festive decorations. Residents of the Silver Jubilee Home showed their appreciation and gamely participated in the singing sessions with KDU student volunteers. At the end of the visit, the elderly were left with joyful memories and goodie bags.

KDU students who volunteered for this social visit expressed gratitude for the opportunity to reach out to the community. KDU student Joel Song Kwok Chun said that KDU’s community outreach programmes are ideal platforms to build social awareness and instill a sense of care and giving among students.

Pham Minh Chau, an international student from Vietnam, said, “I couldn’t be home to celebrate this Chinese New Year with my family in Vietnam, but I had the chance to experience an equally meaningful festive event here with the elderly folks at Silver Jubilee Home.”
