Visiting Thai Students Explore English for Research

Forty students from Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University, Thailand recently seized the day by taking the opportunity to further advance their knowledge in "English for Research" at KDU College Penang campus on 28th January 2010 during their holiday visit to Penang.

This brings advantage and exposure while studying with the Centre for English Language (CEL), KDU College as part of their short trip to Penang, Malaysia, a major tourist destination in South-East Asia. Their aim was simple: to take the chance to grasp insights and update their knowledge of English language for new ideas and materials when conducting their research and search for knowledge.

During the 'English for Research' workshop, students are given equal opportunities to develop and exploit their talents, abilities and basic skills required for writing and effective report in "Elements of a Research Proposal and Report" and "Referencing". Students worked in groups throughout the different sessions, participating in lots of games, quizzes and activities to make learning enriching, fun and communicative. The classroom environment was never a dull moment as they participated actively during the learning exercises using experiential learning strategies between facilitators and their peers, with each given equal opportunities to develop and best exploit their talents and abilities.

Ms. Jasamine Ooi, Head of the Centre for English Language who addressed the post graduates during the 'English for Research' workshop said "We have been running the programmes for many years which aims to improve and develop their English proficiency besides leadership skills. There are many international students from nationalities like Thailand, Korea, Indonesia, Mongolia, Sri Langka, India, Turkey,Pakistan and many more coming to pursue their language studies. The unique feature for international students is they pay local fees for an international experience".

CEL also organizes English workshop and programmes for various institutions around the world and its English Language courses are especially popular among high school and post-graduate students, working adults, and even pre-service and in-service teachers.

Students who have completed their English studies may consider furthering their education in Diploma or Degree Programmes. Here at KDU College, students are prepared for functioning in a global economy by broadening their perspective and assisting them to gain greater insights into cross-cultural perspectives.
